High School Physical Science/ Intro to Physics

“Thank you for such an amazing first year of homeschooling. Your classes are so much fun!”

Recommended for 8th-10th grade

In this 30-week course, we will learn all about the world we live from a Christian view. We will study things as familiar as air, water and sound and others as mysterious as radioactivity and distant galaxies as well as a healthy dose of engineering concepts. Do you like to predict the weather? We’ll study that, too. I like to have fun while I learn, and science is full of fun! Expect the classes to be filled with research, labs, experiments and all sorts of hands-on and real-world applications.

This course will provide a firm foundation for all high school science courses with critical thinking, scientific discovery & research, and career exploration.

This course & textbook meet the requirements for High School Physical Science and lab credit. I will provide curriculum from the following textbook.

Textbook: Introductory Physics (2nd or 3rd Editions), by John Mays

***The textbook is not required in class, but you will want a copy to use at home. I suggest the e-book version with a 1-year license. It is less than half the cost of the actual book. Click here for the link!

The tutor will provide additional curriculum and all classroom materials for labs.

Tuition:$400* per year. Must be paid in 1, or 2 post dated checks to Betty Albert for July 1st and October 1st. Non-Refundable after July 1.

Supply/Lab Fee: $75 per year; Non-Refundable
This fee includes all lab & classroom supplies needed for each student.

*All fees are nonrefundable after July 1st unless a class does not meet the minimum requirement of students. Please check with individual tutors about their minimum requirements per class.

Biology with STEM Integration

Course Prerequisites:  Must be in 9th – 12th grade

The study of Biology prepares students for a variety of careers where you can make a difference in our world. With a Christian perspective, this 30 week course will address how the study of life affects our own life and our environment. Topics are not limited to all aspects of plants and animals, cell structure, DNA & genetics, microscopic life, anatomy & physiology and any other topics involving the living creatures in our world. We will accomplish this with our dynamic textbook, discovery lessons, experiments, lab work, dissections and lots of fun! The dissections will always be performed in dignified, respectful and non-threatening manner with proper preparation of all students. There will be alternative assignments to dissections as needed. The planned dissections are dependent on availability – major organs, frog, earthworm, crayfish, perch, pigeon, fetal pig, etc.

Required Text: Apologia Exploring Creation with Biology 2nd edition
The tutor will supplement with many outside sources to help students learn beyond the textbook.

Tuition: $425 per year.  Must be paid in 1, or 2 post-dated checks to Betty Albert for July 1st and October 1st.

Non-Refundable after July 1.

Supply/Lab Fee: $75 per year. Non-refundable. *Includes all hand-outs, hands-on lesson materials, lab supplies: specimens, use of dissection tools, microscopes, slides, etc.

*All fees are nonrefundable after July 1st unless a class does not meet the minimum requirement of students. Please check with individual tutors about their minimum requirements per class.

CHEMISTRY with STEM integration

Course Prerequisites: 9th – 12th grade *Must have completed Algebra

Chemistry is the science of how things around us interact. The natural laws that govern atoms, elements, and compounds are amazing! This 30 week course will be discovery and lab based with an emphasis on STEM to reach all levels of students. Through critical thinking, scientific research and hands-on activities, students will learn to understand and express chemical reactions, chemical equations, stoichiometric relationships, chemical solutions & compounds, thermodynamics and so much more!

Required Text: Apologia Exploring Creation with Chemistry 3rd edition The tutor will supplement with many outside sources to help students learn beyond the textbook.

Tuition: $425 per year. Must be paid in 1, or 2 post-dated checks to Betty Albert for July 1st and October 1st.

Non-Refundable after July 1.

Supply/Lab Fee: $60 per year.  Non-refundable *includes all hand-outs, hands-on lesson materials, and lab supplies needed for the course including use of microscopes, slides, and all lab equipment.

*All fees are nonrefundable after July 1st unless a class does not meet the minimum requirement of students. Please check with individual tutors about their minimum requirements per class.

ANATOMY & PHYSIOLOGY

“Ms. Betty is an inspiration to me and such an amazing teacher! I couldn’t have asked for a better one.”

Grade level: 11th -12th Pre-requisites: Biology 1

This 30-week College-Prep course covers the basics of human anatomy and physiology including anatomical terminology, basic biochemistry, cells and tissues, and in-depth study of the eleven major organ systems in the human body. The lab component includes anatomical studies using microscopy and dissection and the study of physiological concepts via experimentation. We study comparative anatomy using the actual and virtual dissections of internal animal organs, birds, snakes, rats, cats and other specimen as supply allows. The dissections are done in a very non-threatening and respectful way that has allowed students that avoid such tasks to participate. This learning of how we are fearfully and wonderfully made will also lead to the study of how the processes and interactions of body systems impact how we build and invent technology today.

This course and lab are a great introduction for those students interested in a medical career (nursing, physical therapy, physical education, pharmacy, and public health). We will also have some introduction of bio-medical concepts and devices that are attractive to future scientists and zoologists.

Required Text:
ADVANCED BIOLOGY: THE HUMAN BODY 2ND EDITION STUDENT TEXTBOOK The tutor will supplement with many outside sources to help students learn beyond the textbook.

Tuition:$425* per year. Must be paid in 1, or 2 postdated checks to Betty Albert for July 1st and October 1st. Non-Refundable after July 1.

Online ACT Prep: Science and Reasoning Course

Pre-Requisite: Must be currently enrolled in Junior or Senior Level English or Math at Horizon Homeschooling.
This course will demystify the science portion of the ACT by clarifying common misconceptions about the test and by learning test taking strategies.

The science portion of the ACT is divided in to three portions: data representation, research summaries, and conflicting viewpoints. The course will emphasize reading and applying information from graphs, tables and charts, decoding research paragraphs to accurately answer questions and apply information, and analyzing differing viewpoints to deduce both similarities and differences. The course will also offer resources for the portion of the ACT that does require outside science knowledge. All lessons and coursework will be submitted online, including tests and quizzes.

Required Materials:

Tuition* $100 Non-Refundable after July 1.
Supply Fee with Technology Fee included: $100 non-refundable fee includes online access to Official ACT Prep

Class size minimum set at 6 registered students.
