Introduction to Literature w/Composition and Grammar

This course introduces high school students to literature by focusing on the elements of the story: plot, setting, theme, conflict, narrator, voice, and character development. We will read a play, short novels, short stories, and a series of letters and poems throughout the year to study the elements of each. Students will be asked to keep a response journal and a vocabulary notebook throughout the year. Students will complete one creative writing exercise per class session and one academic writing assignment per month. A larger academic paper will be due by the end of the year. We will incorporate grammar exercises weekly and learn to proofread our own writings.
A book/supply list will be available at registration.

Course fee: $375/year. May be paid in full or as 2 payments to Casey Sigler, postdated July 1 and October 1. Please arrange payment directly with tutor. Non-Refundable after July 1st.

English 2 (10th/11th)

American Literature

This course will provide the students with a semi-chronological and thematic survey of American literature.  We will study native oral traditions and colonial-era content to modern stories that include fiction and literary nonfiction. Students will be asked to keep a response journal and a vocabulary notebook throughout the year. Students will complete one creative writing exercise per class session and one academic writing assignment per month. A larger academic paper will be due by the end of the year. We will continue to incorporate ACT grammar exercises weekly and learn to proofread our own writings. Assignments will include creative, informative, or persuasive writing pieces, literary analysis, independent reading, public speaking, and daily practice activities related to the elements of literature and composition.

English 3 (11th/12th)

British Literature

British Literature is a survey course of epic poems, plays, poetry, novels, historical documents, and speeches. The students will focus on the following learning experiences: a reflection and response to our readings, literary analysis, research, and language skills (vocabulary and grammar). Students will learn to reflect on various points of view while displaying creative, collaborative, and critical thinking skills. They will work toward becoming proficient readers, effective writers, active listeners, and articulate speakers. Students will be asked to keep a response journal and a vocabulary notebook throughout the year. Students will complete one creative writing exercise per class session and one academic writing assignment per month. A larger academic paper will be due by the end of the year. We will continue to incorporate ACT grammar exercises weekly and learn to proofread our own writings.

English 3/4 with Advanced World Literature

Pre-requisites: Students must be 11th or 12th grade

Juniors and Seniors will earn 1 English credit with successful completion of this class. Multiple essays, literary analysis assignments, and projects will be assigned throughout this 30-week course. Students will develop and practice critical thinking skills through the analysis of short stories, novels, poetry, and plays. This course will cover advanced world literature. Mrs. Suzanne works closely with other English tutors to assure students are not repeating literature. Students will gain an understanding of the themes, history, vocabulary, symbolism, grammar, and literary devices found within the classic selections.
Additionally, students will work from The Complete Guide to ACT English to increase grammar proficiency. Daily homework will be required to complete this course successfully. While the course is academically rigorous, it is also enjoyable and includes rich conversation within the class.
Class Requirements:
• Must have daily access to the internet and printer
• All essays and papers will be turned in online

Keep in mind that advanced literature selections often contain mature topics, adult language, or adult themes. Adult content is dealt with from a distinctly Christian perspective. Our literature pieces are carefully chosen to expose students within a broad context to classical and modern literature and authors that college-bound students are expected to have encountered during their high school career.

Tuition*: $425 a year, paid in one or two postdated checks to Suzanne Pike, July 1 and October 1

Class size minimum set at 6 registered students. All fees will be held until minimum is met.

Tuition payment arrangements must be made with individual tutors. A nonrefundable Early Registration fee of $60 per student will be paid directly to Horizon Homeschooling (max. $180 per family) via online registration. Registration is $70 per person after May 31st (max. $210 per family).

NOTE: Registration is not complete until registration fees and tutor supply/material fees* are paid at our Open House. Registrations after Open House are to be completed with all fees paid to tutors within two weeks of online registration in order to avoid restarting the registration process.

*All fees are nonrefundable after July 1st.

Horizon Homeschooling Tutors are contracted to serve as enrichment tutors alongside a comprehensive home education program. Grade reporting is the responsibility of the student’s parent or guardian.

Note: Horizon Homeschooling is not an umbrella school.
